BETAPACK AND DANSAND – A SUSTAINABLE PARTNERSHIP

Written by BetaPack A/S | 03.01.23

When it comes to producing and delivering film-based packaging solutions for both food and industrial products, BetaPack are specialists. We've been doing it for over 20 years. Our goal is always to help our customers find the best possible solution — and that’s exactly what we did for Dansand.

In 2020, Dansand approached us for help finding a more sustainable alternative to the conventional laminate plastic film they had been using to package dried quartz sand — without compromising on quality. While plastic offers strong benefits in terms of product protection and durability, it also has a notable environmental footprint.

Dansand’s goal was to reduce the use of virgin laminate plastic film. However, it was crucial that any new solution could meet the same durability and quality standards as the conventional material — otherwise, the environmental benefit would be lost.

“Sustainability and recyclability are major focus areas for us — and something our customers are increasingly demanding. That’s why we value BetaPack’s commitment to sustainability and their support in helping us meet our CSR goals and growing regulatory demands,”
says Søren Torp Madsen, Production Manager at Dansand.

Recyclability in focus
Creating packaging that meets durability and quality standards while supporting sustainability can be a challenge — but it’s far from impossible.

“In collaboration with Dansand, we developed a film that is 100% recyclable and made with 30% recycled materials. These recycled materials come from scrap films and surplus raw materials from our own production here at BetaPack. In the future, we also aim to use external waste — plastic sourced from other companies — in our products,”
says Jonas Krog Toft, Sales Manager at BetaPack.

For Dansand, using recycled raw materials has led to a significant reduction in virgin material use — a total of 547,763 metres of film, equivalent to 41,309 kg.

The introduction of the new laminate film has gone smoothly. Despite reducing the amount of virgin material, customers, carriers, and Dansand themselves continue to experience the same high quality as before.

Looking ahead
These positive results have encouraged Dansand to raise their ambitions. As a next step, the first bags made from 50% recycled laminate plastic film have now been tested — an important milestone towards further increasing the recycled content in both the film and the finished packaging.

“Our ambition is clearly to increase the amount of recycled materials in the film we use. But it’s also extremely important that the product we deliver meets our usual high quality. That’s why further testing is needed — which we are already working on in collaboration with BetaPack,”
Søren Torp Madsen continues.

At BetaPack, we’re committed to supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals — especially Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). That’s why we’re particularly proud of our strong partnership with Dansand — and they feel the same.

“We have a close and productive partnership with BetaPack. At Dansand, we value strong relationships with our strategic suppliers — and that will remain a priority going forward. I believe in openness as the foundation of any good collaboration — and that’s exactly what we have with BetaPack,”
concludes Søren Torp Madsen.
