The EU is currently working on new requirements for packaging through the PPWR regulation (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation). Among other things, the purpose is to reduce packaging waste, increase focus on the collection and recycling of packaging, and create more harmonised rules across the EU.

The first requirements will enter into force on 12 August 2026. Although several details and implementation dates are still being clarified, it may already be beneficial to consider how the upcoming requirements could affect your company’s packaging solutions.

Dansand and BetaPack – collaboration on a film-based packaging solution

At BetaPack, we work with the development and delivery of film-based packaging solutions for a wide range of industries, including food and industrial products. With more than 20 years of experience, we advise on and tailor solutions that match our customers’ specific requirements for functionality, quality, and practical use.
The collaboration with Dansand is an example of how technical requirements, material choices, and customer-driven ambitions can come together in the development of a new packaging solution.

Dansand’s needs and ambitions
In 2020, Dansand approached BetaPack with a request to explore what they described as a more responsible alternative to their existing laminated plastic film used for packaging dried quartz sand. At the same time, it was essential for Dansand that any new solution would continue to meet the necessary requirements for strength, durability, and product protection.

Development of a new film solution
In collaboration with Dansand, BetaPack developed a new type of film containing 30% recycled raw materials. The solution has been tested and adapted to ensure it meets the same functional requirements as the previous packaging in terms of strength, durability, and quality.
The material composition was selected based on technical assessments and product requirements and has been integrated into Dansand’s existing packaging process.

A collaboration focused on quality and documented choices
The collaboration with Dansand demonstrates how dialogue, testing, and documented material choices can form the basis for developing new packaging solutions. BetaPack continues to provide advisory services and development within film-based packaging, where functionality, quality, and material selection remain key parameters.

In the spring of 2024, Dansand was left with approximately 6.5 tonnes of surplus plastic film that could no longer be used in production due to discontinued designs. In collaboration with BetaPack, a solution was established in which the film was instead collected, sorted, and sent for regeneration, allowing the material to be used in new plastic-based products.

The solution forms part of Dansand’s considerations around a more circular approach to material handling, where surplus film can be processed and reused in new applications.
