For Tina, packaging is more than just packaging

Packaging serves several purposes – it must protect a product during transport, preserve product quality, be functional, and have an appealing look and presence on the shelf. Tina Thrane Poulsen knows exactly how to achieve all of this in a single packaging solution.

Ever since Tina Thrane Poulsen wrote her final project at Aalborg University on plastic packaging and graduated as an industrial designer, she has known that she wanted to work with packaging. Today, she has been working as a packaging designer specialising in paperboard at BetaPack since 2018, and it is rare for two working days to be the same.

“My primary task is to design new corrugated and solid board packaging solutions for our customers, but over the course of a working day, I also handle many other tasks,” says Tina.

“On a typical working day, I also spend a lot of time approving constructions. Sometimes manufacturers make small adjustments to a construction so it runs better on the machines, and then it comes to me for approval before the final design goes into production. On other days, I visit customers to see how a design performs on the packing machines – and to help resolve any issues that may arise.”

The many benefits of optimising packaging

When Tina designs packaging solutions, she always strives to optimise the packaging as much as possible – both in terms of logistics and environmental impact. By using palletising software and working closely with manufacturers, the goal is to maximise packaging efficiency and minimise wasted space on pallets.

A good example is a current project where we are testing whether an EB flute can be replaced by the somewhat thinner EE flute. The solution still uses five layers of paper, but the flute thickness is reduced by approximately 25%, resulting in several advantages.

“The benefits of using an EE flute are many. More products can be placed on each pallet, fewer pallets need to be handled internally in the warehouse and in production, and transport costs are reduced. When more products can be transported on each pallet, it also allows us to reduce environmental impact. All in all, it is a very good solution” Tina explains.

New projects require a bit of inspiration

There are many ways to find inspiration for a new packaging design. When Tina looks for inspiration for a new project, her approach is very straightforward: she simply visits different shops and supermarkets to study the many types of packaging on display.

“When I design new packaging, my primary focus is, of course, who the customer is, what the product is, and how it needs to be packed. And when I need a bit of inspiration, supermarkets and shops are my go-to. Some people probably find it a bit odd that I stand there taking photos of products and turning them around, but it’s a really good way to find inspiration and kick-start my creative process” Tina explains.

Fully in control of the annual FSC® audit

Last but certainly not least, Tina is also involved in preparing BetaPack for the annual FSC audit, where the company must be able to document the traceability of the wood fibre-based products that BetaPack trades. This is an important process that helps ensure healthy forests full of life – for the benefit of both present and future generations.

Jens is a true product nerd

Produktspecialist Ravn

Although Jens Ravn Sørensen is trained as a freight forwarder, it was never actually the plan that he would end up as a Product Specialist at BetaPack – but now, more than 13 years later, he cannot imagine doing anything else.

For Jens, the role as Product Specialist in the construction department has many facets, and it very much requires in-depth knowledge of both the industry and the products themselves – and as he puts it, he is a bit of a Swiss army knife.

“When you’ve been at BetaPack for more than 13 years like I have, you’ve had your hands in just about everything. In my role, I need to know what our products are capable of and understand the key parameters when we develop new solutions. At the same time, I have to be deeply involved in documentation and sustainability related to our products. So yes, I know a lot – about a lot” Jens explains.

No two working days are the same

The varied nature of the work, the many points of contact, the development of existing products, and new and exciting projects – that is exactly what makes Jens’ working week something special.

“My working days are very diverse. I handle technical questions from both customers and colleagues, take part in new projects and product development, and I’m responsible for proofreading all product documentation. I never get bored, and one of the best things about it all is that I learn something new every day – to a greater or lesser extent” Jens says.

One area in particular takes up a lot of Jens’ time: sustainability and documentation. There is an increasing focus on being able to document and quality-assure every aspect of a construction project – right down to the smallest detail of each individual product used. This is where Jens’ expertise and sharp eye for detail come into play, ensuring that all product documentation is always 100% accurate.

Exciting projects always in the pipeline

For Jens, several exciting projects are currently underway – including a few he can already share more about.

“In one of the projects, we are working on optimising the recyclability of selected products in order to reduce CO₂ emissions and waste as much as possible – of course without compromising on quality. In another project, we are developing new products that require us to build an entirely new knowledge base.”

Product Specialist

The exciting projects are one thing – the strong collaboration is another. Both are aspects Jens greatly values in his role as Product Specialist at BetaPack.

“It’s really rewarding to be part of different projects where we work together to reach the goal and find the very best solution. As teams, we are good at making use of each other’s strengths, which simply makes it easier and more effective for us to create something great” Jens concludes.
