New climate regulations in construction: What do they mean for you?

On January 1, 2023, new climate requirements came into force as part of the Danish Building Regulations (BR18). The goal is to reduce the climate impact of the construction industry and support a more sustainable building sector. As a result, developers must increasingly document the environmental footprint of their projects – particularly through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

The LCA maps the total climate impact of a building over its entire life cycle, including materials, energy use, operation, maintenance, and disposal. The purpose is to create a more holistic picture of the environmental impact and promote more sustainable choices throughout the construction process.

Today, all new buildings over 1,000 m² must include an LCA to obtain a building permit. The calculation must cover specific life cycle phases and comply with the technical requirements of BR18.

In addition, there is a defined limit for CO₂ emissions in projects of this scale – and these requirements are expected to tighten and expand toward 2025, eventually covering more building types and size categories. The trend is clear: sustainability is becoming a basic condition in both construction and renovation.

This places new demands on planning and material selection. As a developer, advisor, or contractor, it’s essential to document the products and components used in your project – including packaging, films, and accessories, which are often overlooked in the planning phase.
